Education is a call to action
Muscort Musiega was a man who dedicated his life to service. He always believed that the purpose of education was to use it to better this world. Sponsored as a child up to college, he was one of the lucky ones; he had a college degree and had the potential to be in the top echelon of society. However, he returned to the Lenana slum and in 1999, started the first community primary school to service the orphans and street children living there.
For the past 13 years, he has been defending these children, providing them security and a quality education. However, without a secondary school in the community, for many of his graduates, education stopped at grade 8. Girls would get married at an early age and boys would find casual labor. Muscort knew that if life in the slums were to get better, a secondary education would be necessary.
That's where The Supply comes in. The Supply met Muscort and his students in 2010. Muscort's story resonated deeply with us; if Muscort could defend these children, then surely we could do the same. We forged a unique friendship and strong partnership and by 2012, The Supply and the Lenana community were able to raise enough funds to build the first secondary school. We were all excited to open the doors in January 2013 for the first class of secondary school students, many whom had gone through so many life challenges in order to obtain their education.
The last step was to furnish this school with the basic furniture necessary for these students. However, on December 4th, Muscort passed away from illness. This was a sad day for the entire community, the students and The Supply.
We realized the best thing we can do to remember Muscort was to proceed as planned as that's what Muscort would have wanted -- he did not want to wait a single day for these children to continue in their education.
So, we are asking you to give generously during these next two weeks as we would love to provide the best christmas gift that these students could ask for.
