Berine Achieng was born on the 27th of May 1999. Berine and her step-brother George Odhiambo have attended Christ Gift Academy since January 2006. Berine had been to another school for 1 year, but passed the test to be accepted into our pre-primary class. Berine is the 3rd born of four. Her youngest brother is also attending CGA. Her father was murdered in 2005. Her mother is still alive and supports the family by running a small tea kiosk at the fishing beach. Her house is a two room semi-permanent house with iron sheet roof and mud walls and floor. She sleeps on a mat under a mosquito net in the living room. They have no electricity or running water in her village. They do their washing at the lake and bring water home for cooking then treat it with chlorine for drinking. Berine’s teachers report she works diligently on her assignments. She is a very strong, little girl who walks almost three and a half miles to and from school every day. 2017 Update: Berine graduated from CGA in 2015, and joined a boarding High school in 2016.
