Saline Atieno was born on December 27, 1999. She began attending standard three at CGA in January 2011. She is a total orphan. Her father died before she was born, and her mother died in 2003. After her mother died she stayed with her grandmother who had lost five of her ten children and was caring for four other orphans. When the grandmother died in August 2010, Saline remained with an uncle. The uncle was not willing to pay for Saline’s education, so she came to stay with her aunt Daina Odoyo, who teaches at CGA. Her aunt Daina is a wonderful Christian woman who helped to begin CGA. Daina has four children of her own; one in college, one in secondary and two girls who still attend CGA primary school. Saline is very happy to be a part of this family and the family at CGA. They live in a strong, well kept permanent house with 3 bedrooms and an inside kitchen. They have water tap in the compound and electricity. They cook inside with charcoal and gas and sometimes outside with firewood. They have an outside toilet, inside bath and treat their water for drinking. Saline helps by washing the dishes, lighting the fire for cooking and keeping the house clean. She shares a bed with her youngest cousin. They have a mattress, blanket and net. Saline has been welcomed in the standard three classroom. She was a bit behind academically, but is catching up quickly. 2017 update: Saline has graduated from CGA and joined a boarding high school in January 2017.
