Meet Genet. She was living with her husband and child, they were a happy, healthy family. Suddenly her husband passed away and she found herself scared and alone with a young son. It was then she decided to make the journey to Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. Upon arrival she found that the only place she could make rent was in the Koshe garbage dump area (Korah), just outside of the capital city. Genet settled, got remarried and felt happy again. Shortly after her second son was born her husband left. Again, she was alone and struggled to provide and care for her children. Life was very hard, she began begging on the street but she couldn’t cover her house rent or food for her 2 children. She began to scavenge from the garbage dump for scraps of food to eat or plastics to sell for small amounts of money.
In her desperation Genet had heard about Caring for Korah and how we helped needy families. She approached our staff and after assessing her situation her son Siyum was accepted into our
child sponsorship
program. This meant Siyum would have an education, access to medical care, proper nutrition and most importantly have a safe place to meet friends and learn about Jesus Christ. Shortly after joining the program Genet was able to join the women's income generation group, Women of Korah. Genet enjoys the women’s group and has learned skills that allow her to make product and earn a monthly salary. Genet
says there are many differences in her life before and after joining the group. She is able to
provide and care for her boys, pay house rent and buy food every month. She is proud to show her son what it means to work hard. She recalls how she had no friends but now she enjoys the company of friends daily and it makes her so happy. The
thing that brings her the most joy is knowing Christ and his love for her and her family.
