Bedjina Nere
16 years old Female Haiti
Bedjina was born on June 21, 2008 in the countryside of Croix Des Bouquet, Haiti. Generally speaking, the countryside of Haiti is extremely impoverished. Despite the fact that the entire country lives below the poverty line, due to the fact that the countryside is removed from the city, it has limited access to electricity, clean water, medical attention and education, making basic living circumstances extremely difficult. Unfortunately, Bedjina lived under these conditions. In addition to this, when she was just a little girl, her biological father passed away. After his passing, her mother was left with the sole responsibility of providing. With no job opportunity, and no way to make money, this task proved harder than expected. In hopes to provide a better life for her family, her mother decided to get remarried.
Over the years Bedjina’s mother and new father started their own family. But, as their family grew, the harder it became for everyone’s needs to be met. Sadly, Bedjina’s new “father” decided that he would no longer be taking care of her. He claimed that because she was not his own, he felt no obligation to make sure she was provided for. With little options, Bedjina’s mother was left with no choice but to send her Chanje Lakay. Prior to moving to the shelter, Bedjina had never seen a white person before. She was timid, scared, and quiet. However, today, Bedjina is completely different. She is happy, healthy and loved! She loves to dance and is a spunky, fun-loving, energetic cutie! She loves school and loves to learn. We are so happy Bedjina has found a home at Chanje Lakay!
