Benta is the last of two children. Her father died in 2002. In 2005, her mother died leaving Benta and her siblings in the care of an uncaring step grandmother and step uncles.
Benta Akinyi was born on the 13th of July, 1999. She began attending CGA in 2004. Benta is the last of two children. Her father died in 2002. In 2005, her mother died leaving Benta and her siblings in the care of an uncaring step grandmother and step uncles. Because of this situation her aunt came and took Benta to her home where she lived happily for one year. In January 2009, Benta decided to come back to her uncle’s house and join her brother who lives there. The house is a semi-permanent three room house. It is situated on the other side of the hill, a ten minute walk to school. It is close to the main road and about 20 minutes to the lake where they get water. There is no electricity in this village and they use kerosene for lighting. The shops are not very near. Benta’s uncle does some small scale farming and her aunt is involved in a fishing business and that is how they are supported. The uncle has three children that are school age. Benta is a strong and well behaved girl. 2017 Update: Benta has grown into a fine young lady, and likes debating while in school. She will join Form four in 2018. 2018 Update: Benta was in Form 4 at Moi Girls Boarding High School in 2018, and plans to join a higher institution of learning in 2019. She lives with her relatives in a tin roof, mud-wall house in the rural part of Mbita. They have no electricity, and depend on Paraffin for lighting. They fetch water from the Lake, and treat it for drinking.
