On December 1, 2017, we announced to our family and friends that we were beginning the adoption process. Knowing that adoption is a journey with many twists and turns, we were certainly expecting a wait. We did not expect, though, for it to be mid-2019 before our journey even started picking up steam.
Adoption has been on our hearts since before we were even married. Emily mentioned the idea to Kyle one afternoon while lounging on the lawn of our college campus, and to her surprise, he was immediately on board. After marriage, we worked to establish our careers and married relationship for a few years, but adoption was often still part of our conversations. We both knew that we also desired to have a biological child and assuming (incorrectly) that having biological children would be an easier path, we decided to start there.
Unfortunately, our first 2 children died during pregnancy. We were completely devastated. Grieving the loss of our babies was the hardest thing we ever had to do. We will always hate that this pain is apart of our story, but over time we have learned to appreciate our grief experience because we strongly believe that God used it to grow us in many necessary ways and prepare us for adoption. Our heavenly babies will always be important, honored, and celebrated members of our family.
We were eventually blessed with our earthly daughter, Blakely. Her beginnings in this world were anything by normal; we almost lost her as well. God was gracious, though, and spared her life. Today she is a happy, hilarious, and healthy 3 year old who fills our lives with one joy-filled day after another (and she cannot wait to be a big sister!!)
After the dust settled, we knew that we were being led to follow through with our adoption plans for the continued growth of our family. And after several large twists and turns that occurred right at the beginning of our journey that resulted in our plans being put on hold several times and one very long wait list to become accepted as clients with our chosen agency, we are thrilled to say that we can be chosen by an expectant mom at anytime.
We are beyond excited and are doing everything we can to be prepared to welcome a beautiful new life into our home. We are also extremely excited to welcome our child's first mom into our lives and show her God's love as part of an open adoption relationship. Part of the funds we receive from our generous donors will be used to support her through pregnancy, delivery, and the rest of her life, as she will receive a lifetime of post-placement pastoral care. Wherever she is, we are so grateful to her that she will choose life for her child and we strongly believe in honoring her motherhood and supporting her in anyway possible.
As part of our adoption process, we have started a crowdfunding campaign. It may surprise you to hear that adoption related costs can easily total up to $40,000 or more. This is why we have set a goal of $10,000 to help ease the financial burden that often overwhelms adoptive parents.
We hope that by inviting you into this process, you will see yourself as part of the community we hope to build around our child as he or she grows up.
Thank you for your prayers and support as we trust in God's perfect plan and timing.
