Refugees are people fleeing persecution, war, and violence. From October of this year through September of 2017, around 1,800 refugees will find hope, a safe place to live, and their new home in Portland. Unfortunately the state of the rental market has led to a lack of housing options for newly arriving families. The refugee resettlement agencies are desperate, as funds are needed for short-term and long-term solutions to resettle those being placed here.
Many refugee families are currently arriving to Portland without having a place to stay long-term. Due to the tight rental market and inherent challenges in acquiring apartments without residents (refugees) being present, they are placed in whatever temporary shelter can be found. Refugees are also in the impossible situation of paying for housing in Portland with the limited funds they have. The Emergency Housing Fund will provide temporary housing for families that don’t have a place to stay upon their arrival, and also help subsidize the cost of rent as families arrive, before they begin working and making an income. As long-term solutions for refugee resettlement housing are explored, we will support the agencies financially in developing and carrying out plans that will sustain refugee resettlement in our city for many years to come.
We have the unique honor and responsibility to welcome, care for, and love more refugees than the majority of our country receives. These funds will impact the lives of many in profound ways, as refugee families transition from their crisis-centric reality to a thriving new life in Portland.
