An Economic Powerhouse
With over 115 million residents, Maharashtra state is India’s second-most populated state. Its location along India’s southwestern coast makes it a prime target for monsoons and wide temperature swings throughout the year. It is home to three game reserves, five national parks, and 24 distinct bird sanctuaries.
Maharashtra state was established in 1960 after tense and fatal protests by the Marathi-speaking people. With Mumbai as its capital, Maharashtra boasts a powerful international trade platform and entertainment industry. It is also home to India’s primary stock exchange. Collectively, the state contributes 18% of India’s industrial output.
A People Without Christ
Today, 82% of Maharashtra’s population follows the teachings of Hinduism. It also contains the highest concentration of Buddhists in India. Over 735 people groups reside in the region. Over Approximately 100 of them are unreached, spanning over 40,000 villages.
Despite the state’s strong economic growth, many Dalits (formerly known as “untouchables”) still live in the background. In 2006, groups protested for months and eventually turned violent following the ethnic murders of four Dalits earlier that year.
What We’re Doing
We’re on mission in Maharashtra to see Jesus magnified. We’re doing this by establishing I am Second groups in all 40,000 villages by the end of 2020. We are fervently praying that the the Lord will gather families and communities from every caste to spread the Gospel and create immediate, sustained discipling relationships on this expedition.
This is your chance to help the people of Maharashtra understand their true value as God’s prized creation. We will explain how the Son of God suffered and died to rescue mankind - even the lowest of the low - so that we can have purpose and freedom in him.
