About This Field Partner

our vision

eduKenya is a movement of people who believe that life can be radically different for the 600,000 people who reside in the Mathare slum of Nairobi, Kenya.

Tin-roofed huts and shacks line trash and sewage-filled streets in Mathare

Where there are thousands of idle, uneducated children vulnerable to recruitment by violent gangs, we see every child safely in school working toward their dreams. Where there are countless adults toiling to earn less than $2 each day, we see them empowered with income-generating skills that provide enough for their families. Where there is rampant alcoholism and drug use, we see people recovering from addiction and able to work. Where there are trash and sewage-filled streets, we see sanitation solutions and community gardens. Where there is violence, division and despair, we see peace, unity and hope.

Our vision is that every child and his or her family will experience physical, economic and spiritual transformation, and we work to make this a reality person by person and family by family.

What we do

eduKenya works to break the cycle of poverty for children and their families in the Mathare slum through sustainable, holistic and Kenyan-led development programs that center around operating schools. eduKenya holistically addresses the needs of the family through educating elementary-aged children, providing food and health care for students, training parents in income-generating skills and providing home-based care for community members living with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening conditions.

eduKenya is committed to ensuring that all programs are self-sustainable to avoid the common pitfalls associated with international aid. eduKenya's unique sustainability model includes the purchase of rental properties in Nairobi, the rental incomes of which are used to fund eduKenya's operational costs. The goal is that each of eduKenya's schools and related programs will eventually be fully funded by revenue earned from these properties.

What began as a pilot project in 2006 has become a movement of hope in Mathare. Catch the vision and join us today!
