Hello, my name is Emily Smiley. I am a second-year pharmacy student at Xavier University of Louisiana. I am from Mobile, AL and a 2015 graduate of McGill-Toolen Catholic High school. Being an undergraduate and now graduate student at Xavier University of Louisiana has afforded me numerous wonderful opportunities. With the most recent opportunity of being chosen to complete mission work with the Student National Pharmaceutical Association in Copan Ruinas, Honduras. I have always had a passion to serve the underserve, and this is the perfect opportunity for me to do so.

Honduras is a beautiful country in Central America. Despite its beauty, some parts are stricken with poverty, poor health, and death. This is mainly due to the disproportional provider to patient care access ratio, meaning that there's more patients than there's healthcare providers, I.e. doctors, nurses, pharmacist, etc. This disproportional ratio causes the medical field to be overworked and under staffed leading to poor patient care. Due to these circumstances there is a high mortality rate with chronic diseases being the leading cause of death.

While in Honduras, I will triage patients and have private consultations alongside physicians. We will host blood pressure screenings and counsel and dispense medications to patients. There will be eye examinations where we will also provide patients will free eyewear if need. We will also host hygiene lessons to the pediatric patients!
