Monday, April 1st, I got an email from our home study social worker whom
we had not heard from since November. She’d heard of another agency
that was urgently trying to find a Florida adoptive family for a
six-week-old baby boy. She gave me the agency director’s contact
information in case we were interested. I contacted her, we chatted over
the next few days about our questions and the specific details and
logistics of the birth family’s case. We eventually set up a phone call
with the birth family for Wednesday evening. Matt and I went to church
that night, shared our prayer request with our church family, and then
drove back home to arrive in time for our phone appointment. We prayed
together, and then the phone rang. We spoke on the phone with the birth
mother and the caseworker for over an hour; it went very well. We hung
up and prayed again, “Lord, we love this child and birth family so much
already. We would love for this baby to be our son. Please help us to
respond well and give your glory even if this is not your will.” The
caseworker said she’d be in touch in the morning, so Matt and I began
getting ready for bed. Thirty minutes later, we received a text from the
caseworker stating the birth family wanted to move forward with placing
their son for adoption into our family and that we should head up to
Kentucky as soon as possible. We wept with joy! We packed very quickly,
but also thoroughly, knowing we may be out of state for up to three
weeks because of interstate adoption laws. We left at 5:30 the next
morning and drove all day, finally arriving in Kentucky around 9:45pm.
The next day, Friday, April 5th, we met the birth family for lunch. This
was incredibly difficult; we could clearly see and feel the love they
had for their child and their desire to parent him that had been
thwarted by multiple sad circumstances. Legal paperwork was signed late
that evening, then the birth family said their goodbyes and lovingly
placed their son into our arms. We named him “Judah” which means
“praise”. A few weeks later, we arrived safely back in Florida and
celebrated Judah’s arrival with our church family on Easter Sunday. It
all still seems surreal. We are extremely grateful to God, our Father,
for his clear leading and sovereignty in His timing and loving plan.
