In an effort to bring attention to the issues facing haiti and on-going solutions JCI sent Blogger Jill Filipovic to investigate
10 days ago,
Feministe blogger, Jill Filipovic visited Haiti to learn more about the deep-rooted issues facing the country and how the construction of a multi-purpose community center could help address those issues!
One of the eye-opening experiences she had during her trip was an understanding of how NGOs operate in the earthquake-stricken country. "
When you see white people in Haiti, they are more often than not self-appointed “helpers” of some kind: NGO workers, missionaries. I was told many times over that NGOs are wildly unpopular, mostly because they swoop in with their own ideas about how to fix the country and don’t help to create long-term citizen-led solutions."
That is what makes the Hope for Haiti Project so unique! It is a project that was developed and continues to be led by citizens of Haiti. Not only did these active citizens and JCI members of Haiti engage the local community to determine what the greatest needs are, but they also involved them in the development of the solutions!
