January 14th Update: Evangelism in Kenya Posted about almost 5 years ago

While in Kenya, one of my favorite activities that my mission team and I participated in was evangelism in the remote villages. In each interaction, it is our desire to either plant or water the seed of Jesus Christ in these people's lives. While we know God is the orchestrator of it all, we can’t always be sure how others will react even if we come with the best intentions. We can only choose to show them love and patience through Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to lead and prompt us on what to say.

The bus ride to the villages consisted of rocky dirt roads that left you no chance of dozing off for a nap, except for some staff members that I assume were beyond desensitized to the experience. Upon stopping in a remote village, my church mission team of 15 along with the R4C staff members were separated into groups of 4 to 6 people. In those groups, we would travel by foot in different directions to see who God would place in our path to speak with and share the Gospel. The R4C staff that went with us spoke Swahili so that we were able to communicate with the majority of people that did not speak English (There are also various tribal languages spoken in Kenya). I recall on one occasion we passed by a mosque on our right side then minutes after encountered two young men, most likely in their early 20’s. The path we were traveling on was very narrow so as to cause you to almost touch shoulders with anyone you passed along the way. Upon encountering them on the path, we got their attention and asked if we could speak with them for a moment. I could tell they were curious to find out what we desired to speak with them about as well as the fact that my team and I were probably the only fair-skinned people within 50 miles distance, possibly even greater. At the time of the trip, I can admit that I was not in as close relationship with Jesus as I am now and I hope that I will continue to draw nearer to Him in all my days to come. Despite this, God made a way for me to go so I know that He desired me to be there and was going to use me even in what I considered an unprepared state. What an awesome God we serve that even amidst what we lack, He provides above and beyond what we could deliver! In that encounter, the Spirit of God was prompting me what to speak to their hearts. I alone could not determine where these men’s hearts were at but God knew every small detail about them so relying on Him to lead the conversation was amazing to witness and be a part of.

It was a blessing to be used by God in all those we encountered in those villages. Cool thing is.. God desires us to be led by the Spirit in ALL circumstances. In Romans 8, we learn that God created us to have our minds governed by the Spirit and not the flesh. If we have accepted Jesus into our hearts, we have confidence that the Spirit of God has made His home inside of us. With this confidence, God helps us defeat all fleshy desires that will try to take precedence over how God has intended us to live. Brothers and Sisters in Christ, be encouraged that God desires to use you to bring glory to His name in your home, school, work or anywhere else you may go. As I prepare and embark on this internship, please keep myself and the team I will travel with in prayer in areas of safety, divine appointments and His plan above all. By prayer or donation, know that you are a part of this mission that I am to partake on to Kenya... all in an effort to share the love of Jesus Christ.
