A lot of time and training for parents go into an adoption. Learning how to parent kids from trauma and hard places can be VERY different from how you parent biological kids or how you were raised. Trauma, (like neglect and abuse ) adversely affect the brain. Changing the way kids respond, see the world, and what they believe to be true. They are NOT trying to react & respond in ways we perceive as negative( anger, withdrawal, outbursts, self harm). Many times they don’t have the capacity to self regulate or respond in healthy ways to “ triggers”. It’s our job as parents, teachers & friends to meet them where they are and give them grace, LOVE and time.
These are a few of the books we have read or are reading along the way. I HIGHLY recommend The Lucky Few. It’s a great read on one family’s journey to adoption & the beauty of letting go. If you’re are a teacher/youth leader or a friend of someone adopting, The Connected Child is a MUST read! It was so helpful and gave us much hope for our future journey.
We know we have so very much to learn. Most of what we “ know” will be put to the test very soon. Will you join us in prayer not only now, but after she is home with us? That is when we will need your support even more. We are giving a life long commitment, a YES to whatever comes our way. Please join us ❤️
