About this trip

Welcome to the experience of a lifetime!

We are super excited that you are planning to travel with us to serve on the ADRA Connections (CNX) Trip to Lilongwe, Malawi! This is going to be an amazing experience and we will greatly improve the lives of the community where we will be working. All over southeast Africa, many schools are struggling to feed and educated their young people due to many reasons. One reason is that there are not enough classrooms. We will spend the week building and improving new classrooms and current classroom buildings for one of the 150 schools that are part of ADRA's School Feeding Initiative in Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Eswatini. Be prepared to dig holes, lay concrete brick, paint, work on floors, and assist in all sorts of school/construction-related projects.

Key trip information:

Dates  This trip will take place May 14 – 24, 2020 just after your graduation. ADRA CNX will have staff waiting for your group on May 14 at the Lilongwe International airport (LLW) and take you by bus to our first hotel, which is not too far away. This is where we will have orientation and understand the details of our project. If your group wants to fly in earlier, you are welcomed to do so; just let us know beforehand and make sure you're there to meet us at the airport on May 14.

Project Location & Living Conditions  The project is in a rural community located in the south of the Malawi mainland. We will be staying each night in a beautiful, local hotel in the community, so be prepared for basic showers, beds, and meals. We will have access to showers and bathrooms with running water, but we will provide clean water for drinking and brushing teeth, etc. Keep in mind that we will be working hard in a very hot area, so come prepared for the weather. You can expect temperatures of High 95°F / Low 70°F. Bring a few warm clothes and a rain jacket just in case, but mostly pack hot weather clothes.

Group Size  In order for this trip to be financial viable, we have to have at least 20 people in the group. If we do not have that number by May 1, we will have to cancel the trip. Please spread the word if you or your friends are interested to go.

Cost per Person

  • STUDENTS: $700 per person. THANK YOU to our donors who make these scholarships possible. The true cost of this trip is $1,400 which includes food, lodging, water, transportation, tourism, travel insurance, translators, work experts, support staff – pretty much everything you’ll need to go on this trip! SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE: each student under the age of 26 who is studying at a school in the USA can apply to receive a $700 scholarship to help with the cost of the trip!!
  • ADULTS: $1,400 per person

Airfare and Fees  You will have to coordinate your own airfare as a group. The cost of the airfare will not be sent to ADRA as you will give that directly to the airline. The listed cost of this trip does NOT include any visa fees, passport application fees, vaccinations, luggage fees, or transportation to/from airport in the USA. Basically, once you get to Lilongwe on May 14, we’ll take care of everything else.

Contacts  Your leaders will work directly with the CNX team to coordinate the group and travel details. Adam Wamack and Cassie Hales are the ADRA CNX trip leaders and will be your main points of contact for any specific questions you might have (students, parents, or anyone else are welcomed to ask questions). Once you register for the trip and start fundraising, you will receive the full Trip Guide with FAQs, a packing list and more details about travel and the location where we’ll be staying, so keep an eye out for that. We hope to see you there!

Register for the Trip  Registration requires a nonrefundable deposit of $250. This is the first part of the full amount you will pay to ADRA Connections. All travelers/volunteers need to register with the same link for $1,400. If you are a student, once you have been approved for your scholarship, your amount will be lowered from $1,400 to the $700 scholarship amount.

You may apply for a service scholarship at https://www.adraconnections.org/scholarships. Once approved, your total trip cost will be reduced by 50% to the scholarship rate. You can use your personal fundraising link to promote on your social media or for any event where you might receive funding.

Keep in Mind    All of you can start gathering your medical, personal, and emergency information and preparing for your trip. Keep in mind that you CANNOT use Pure Charity to fundraise for your airfare; that must be done separately, by law. You will also receive a trip guide with information about the country, the language, a packing list, vaccination recommendations and much more.

Thank you for choosing to work with ADRA Connections and to serve our beneficiaries. We really appreciate the time, money and effort you are putting into this. Good on ya!

 See you there!
