About this trip

Along the winding dirt road that ascends to the Rainbow Mountains of Peru, there is a little town called Japura. Everyday, busloads of tourists pass through the sleepy community on their way to the famous tourist destination, but none stop. In a rural town with limited electricity, running water, and basic resources, there is little to attract the attention and money of those who pass by. The families who call Japura home continue to struggle for survival.

ADRA Connections works to provide these families with the resources they need to build a sustainable future. Being situated 14,500 feet above sea level, the Warm Homes elements are designed to use what the locals have to improve their lives in a sustainable way. Our project includes installing solar panels, building brick ovens with chimneys, enclosing the living space with ceiling covers and double doors, installing tongue-in-groove wood floors, and building a trombe wall that turns the sun's energy into warmth for the house. We also build bathrooms and install functioning toilets, sinks, and showers.

You don’t need to be an engineer, plumber, or electrician to help someone like Carmen. With ADRA Connections and the ADRA Peru Warm Homes Project, you can give a small gift that will have a big impact.

“Before the solar panels, we lived in darkness. Now we can cook at night and my children can study at night. We don’t worry about light anymore.”

—Carmen Rosa
