Spain is a country rich in history, culture, and diversity. Located on the Iberian Peninsula and bordered by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, Spain is known for its varied landscapes, from the rugged mountains of the Pyrenees to the beautiful beaches of its coasts. With a population of approximately 47 million, its capital, Madrid, is the most populous city, followed by Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville. The Spanish people make up the majority ethnic group with smaller communities of Catalans, Basques, and Galicians contributing to the country’s vibrant regional identities. There is also a steadily increasing immigrant population coming from North Africa and West Asia. While Spain is historically a Catholic nation, a significant number of people now identify as secular or non-religious. Evangelical Christians are a small minority, making up less than 1% of the population. There are more than 5000 Pueblos without an evangelical church.
Many Spaniards are open to discussions about faith and spirituality, and there is an enormous need to share the gospel in both urban and rural areas. In the more rural parts of Spain, economic challenges are prominent, reminding us of Jesus’ call to serve the poor and marginalized. Our mission in Spain is to follow the call of the Great Commission by finding Persons of Peace who will one day be the local Timothys reaching out to these communities, sharing the love and truth of Christ with those who may have never heard the gospel message, discipling them, and eventually starting new churches.
Spain offers both opportunities and challenges for spreading the gospel, and we are called to be faithful in proclaiming His word across this beautiful land.
