Maharashtra State, with 115 million men, women, and children, is India’s second-most populated state. Although it's size (area) is about that of New Mexico USA, if it were a country it would be the 11th most populated country in the world! The population includes almost 800 different people groups (tribes, ethic communities, etc.) who speak many different languages, the main one being Marathi. With Mumbai as its capital, Maharashtra does boast a powerful international trade platform and entertainment industry. Despite the state’s strong economic growth, many Dalits (formerly known as “untouchables”) still live in the background. Many of its people are poor, illiterate and live in thousands of rural villages whose location, along India’s southwestern coast, makes their communities a prime target for monsoons and wide temperature swings throughout the year.
A People Without Christ
82% of Maharashtra’s population follows the teachings of Hinduism. The Islam religion has about 10% adherents, while Maharashtra state also contains the highest concentration of Buddhists in India. Thus it is still estimated that 733 of Maharashtra's people groups, spanning across over 40,000 villages, are unreached or unengaged.
HIS and Our Desire
Go with us as we take a modern walk through the book of Acts! Looking to the scriptures and the Holy Spirit for our direction, we will share the Good News where His peace rests (Luke 10). As the LORD draws many to saving faith, we'll disciple new believers using I am Second discovery bible groups. Each team member will participate in starting 1, 2, or 3 house groups during the expedition connecting them with local leaders who will continue to disciple and coach the new small groups ensuring a lasting impact in the region. Come and go with us!
