This November I will be traveling to Haiti with a group from my church to serve and support women and the orphaned children they care for. The effort is led by the charity Help One Now who's mission is committed to empowering and resourcing high-capacity local leaders who care for orphans and vulnerable children in order to transform communities and break the cycle of extreme poverty.
The children we will visit have been rescued from sex traffickers or are at high risk of being trafficked. I am going to show the House Moms who care for these children that they are worthy, to give compassion, and recognition that they are seen. This will be an opportunity to see first hand what is happening in this community and become an advocate for the vulnerable, weak and disadvantaged.
About 30,000 children live in orphanages in Haiti. We will be going to Ferrier Village which consists of 5 homes, a community center and kitchen, a water cistern system, and a security wall. On May 10, 2013, they opened to some of Haiti’s most vulnerable children. They continue to add on more homes, as well as a pre-school for the local community. They are currently at full capacity with 45 children, 10 House Moms, 1 cook, and 2 Directors. And 17 children have been reunified with family over the past 3 years. The village provides a home, food and some schooling but even greater it gives them safety, hope, and a future!
On this trip we will:
● meet the local leaders and the children they serve.
● learn from the local leaders by hearing their stories and engaging in their communities.
● see the impact of Help One Now projects firsthand and gain a new understanding of how complex working in these communities can be.
● become advocates of the country, people and orphans we meet when we return home.
If you feel so inclined, I would greatly appreciate your support in this journey! Any amount is most welcomed and appreciated. -Betsy
