Family & friends,
A year ago, in July 2021, Lisa and I had a life changing experience. We served at a Royal Family Kids (RFK) Camp east of San Diego, where we spent five days with about 20 foster children in a summer camp setting. While Lisa was one of two camp nurses, "Uncle Derek" was in a cabin with three other volunteers and four boy campers.
As we spent time with the campers around the clock sharing meals, attending group activities, tossing water balloons, building treasure boxes, hunting for Snipes, and seeing them just being kids, we gained a new appreciation for how we can be a positive example of an adult in their life...and let them know they do have value.
At
any given time, there are about 2,100 San Diego area children in out-of-home care. All
children placed in foster care have experienced neglect, abuse, and/or
abandonment, but they still need encouragement and affirmation from caring adults.
We both will be volunteering again at RFK's San Diego camp, this time in late June 2022, and are being asked to help provide the funding for the week-long camp where foster kids
can just be kids and give foster parents a week to take care of themselves. Would you consider partnering with us to support this camp?
Your
contribution can dramatically impact the health and well-being of one of San
Diego’s most fragile populations. YOU
can help us make a difference in the lives of children!
Thanks!
Derek
