Second Chance is working to ease suffering, providing hundreds of thousands of meals to hungry people every year. Our hope is to offer an additional 50,000 meals to families in Haiti and the Dominican Republic who have experienced hardship during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
In the recent months we have been exposed to an increasing number of families in the Dominican Republic who currently have no work or ways to provide for their children. Most families, averaging 4 children per household, are barely getting by with the $80 in financial aid given to them by the government since the start of the pandemic. Previous to the pandemic, the average income was approximately $150, with the average cost of living approximately $600. As you can imagine, families have been crippled greatly by the overall impact and hardship in the last year.
As Haiti continues in political unrest and ongoing inflation costs, the country is in as much turmoil today as it has ever been. Based on average income, a plate of food in the United States costs $1.26. For a Haitian buying a plate of food based on the same percentage of their income, that plate of food would cost them USD $73.76. $73.76 for a plate of food is just not affordable. Due to the many ongoing crises in Haiti, thousands of working families are simply no longer able to afford to feed their children
Circumstances outside of their control have made a plate of food a luxury they might have only once a day, if at all. Every day is a struggle to survive in these developing countries.
Through the generosity of our faithful partners, Second Chance provides much-needed nutrition to children and families who would not be able to afford it otherwise. Your heart of compassion and support gives families the nourishment they need to survive.
Please consider what you can do in the month of April to help us reach our goal of 50,000 meals.
