About this Fundraiser

Dear friend,

It’s been some time since I came to you with an urgent funding need, but today I must ask for your help.

We need to raise $32,000 to purchase a vehicle for our program staff in Kenya.

For years, we have postponed this purchase in order to direct resources toward other pressing needs. But a recent message from Judith Olimba, our Kenya Program Director, made it clear to me we cannot wait any longer.

I had recently reached out to Judith about several program matters when she responded with the following message from her phone. These are her exact words (emphasis added):

Hi Bob,

Just seeing this. We had a challenge this evening dealing with one child, Nillan Ray, getting a seizure that he never recovered from. We rushed him to the hospital and unfortunately he has just died. I am trying to get everyone home on motorcycles, kindly allow me to respond tomorrow. It’s 2307 hours here (11:07pm).

Judith

Friend, situations like this are heartbreaking. While it is rare that we lose a child to a medical emergency, our staff are regularly called upon to respond to urgent situations involving children and families.

These emergencies can occur at any hour of the day or night. Children often need to be rushed to the doctor or hospital for immediate medical care - especially during cold and flu season. The children in our program are very vulnerable to illness.

The communities we serve are located in very rural areas of Kenya. Transportation options are limited and expensive. Staff frequently travel by motorcycle taxi, riding on the back of a motorcycle driven by a hired operator. While common in Kenya, this method of transportation carries significant risk.

In fact, Judith herself was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident several years ago and suffered a broken arm. This is a risk we can dramatically reduce.

The vehicle we hope to purchase is an eleven passenger Toyota van. The purchase of the vehicle will immediately strengthen our ability to serve children with disabilities in Kenya, and will allow for the following improvements in our program:

  • Staff will be able to more quickly reach children in crisis.

  • Transportation of parents to monthly support group meetings will be easier and more cost effective.

  • Home care visits, microenterprise visits, and school visits will be increased.

  • Overall annual transportation costs will be greatly reduced.

  • The risk of accidents will be greatly minimized without the need to hire motorcycle drivers.

  • Staff will be able to spend their time more efficiently which will enhance their productivity and the overall effectiveness of our program.

  • Visible branding on the van will promote program awareness.

Would you prayerfully consider making a special gift today?

Your support will help ensure that our staff can respond safely and efficiently when children and families need them most.

With your help, we can raise the $32,000 needed to purchase an imported, Japanese made Toyota van with the following:

  • Branding and modification

  • Vehicle registration

  • Inspection fees

  • Licensing

  • One year of comprehensive insurance

  • Transport of the van to our program area

Thank you for considering this urgent need. With your help, we can strengthen the effectiveness and sustainability of our program as we continue serving children with disabilities in Kenya.

Gratefully,

Bob Klima, CDFI President

P.S. Please DONATE TODAY so we can raise $32,000 to purchase a Toyota eleven passenger van for use in our Kenya program! The purchase of this van will allow us to more quickly reach children in crisis, more effectively transport children and families, and greatly reduce the risk involved with hiring motorcycles for transport.

P.P.S. Did you know that there are seven children living at the CDFI foster home in Kenya? These children were all found abandoned over the past several years. It is our CDFI team who are called by authorities when children with disabilities are found abandoned. With your help today, we can purchase a vehicle so that our staff can more quickly and efficiently respond to these types of situations. DONATE TODAY.
