Sanitary cooking conditions are something most of us take for granted. However, for the children at Hope for the Island Child School and Orphanage, that is not their reality. The current conditions are dire, with all activities taking place outside, exposed to the elements. Charcoal, an unsustainable fuel source, is used for cooking. Food is prepared under a leaking metal lean-to roof, directly on the bare ground. The children must find spots outside to sit and eat.
But we have a plan to change all of that! We have drawn up blueprints for a concrete kitchen and dining hall. This new facility will provide ample space to store daily dry goods. We will install propane stoves, sinks, and preparation surfaces that can be sanitized. Tables and chairs will offer the children a proper place to enjoy their meals safely under a roof. The dining hall will also double as an extra classroom, maximizing the space.
An added bonus is that the concrete blocks for construction are being made on-site, reducing costs. Older teens are learning the skill of brickmaking, providing them with a valuable trade and creating a revenue source for HFIC that will benefit the broader community. This skill will also support future on-site building projects.
With your help, this project can become a reality! We have a generous donor willing to match dollar for dollar up to $25,000 to ensure the completion of this project. Join us today by making a tax-deductible donation. Thank you, and God bless you for your participation!
