Background: ADRA Peru has invited SIMS to bring an interdisciplinary team of students and faculty to the Chuquicahuana Training Center & Camp, a facility located in the Department of Cuzco. ADRA utilizes the training center as a home base for a variety of community outreach projects in communities surrounding the center. Additionally, ADRA hosts several week-long camps emphasizing health themes throughout the year for children, adolescents, and adults in the community. The goal of the camps for children and young people is to expose them to new ways of thinking regarding their physical and mental health. In addition to these service activities with ADRA, SIMS is partnering with the local Seventh-day Adventist church to offer community health education workshops and health fairs. The trip will conclude with a visit to Machu Picchu, a UNESCO world Heritage Site.
Why a mission trip to Peru?
I decided to go on this trip because I have always wanted to go on an international mission trip and enjoy serving through direct action. I also seek to learn more about the culture and experience spiritual growth through service. I plan to share my nutrition knowledge and skills with community members and collaborate with fellow peers during the workshops and health events. This will help me personally and professionally by learning how to work with others of different disciplines, of a different language and be more culturally aware when it comes to patient care as a future registered dietitian. This experience will also help me to be creative in regards to health education and service in a community that I am not familiar with, which will prepare me for future employment within my field.
Thank you for your consideration and please keep my peers and I in your prayers for a safe and successful trip!
