Trip Cost: $ 2,300
Hi! My name is Makayla Schmierer and I live in Tigard, Oregon with my mother, father, and sister. I am a sophomore at Tigard High School and am very involved with my youth group and home church, A Jesus Church. I have been attending A Jesus Church going on 7 years and it is home to me!
Last year I was blessed with the opportunity to join my youth group and go to The Villa Esperanza to serve and enjoy the company of amazing, beautiful, and strong girls. La Villa Esperanza is a home for at-risk, adolescent girls in Managua, Nicaragua. These girls face the threats of hunger, emotional distress, and sexual attack. By providing for these girls emotionally, spiritually, physically, and relationally, La Villa provides an opportunity for young women to break the cycle of generational poverty that they are often born into.
Hear The Cry partners with Forward Edge International who sends dozens of short-term mission teams to Managua every year. While the foundation of these trips are the girls at La Villa, each day while the girls are at schools our team will go throughout the city on work projects. The hope for the Villa is not just that Jesus would radically impact these girls lives, but that He would also impact the girl’s families, the workers at La Villa, and the surrounding communities. We get a chance to help make that impact by working alongside La Villa’s workers, spending time with the girls daily, and serving where there’s a need in Managua.
Last summer I built incredible relationships with the girls at the Villa, the workers, and all of the members on my team. The trip made myself life long friendships that I keep to this day. One girl in particular I connect with was Francis. Before coming to the Villa, Francis lived with her father, mother, two brothers, and sister. Both of her parents work at the Managua dump recycling plant though still make very little to support the family. Francis was pursued heavily by older men and her parents thought that it was in her best interest to join The Villa Esperanza to keep her safe and focus on her school work. She is now able to learn how much God loves her and how worthy she is.
Francis is one of the many amazing girls at the Villa. She loves drawing and shares that with my through the letters that we send to each other. Keeping in touch with Francis is one of the many reasons why returning to Nicaragua is important to me. The friendship we have built will only continue to grow even further.
Any donation is greatly appreciated and means the world to me! If you have any questions or want more information about Hear the Cry or the mission trip feel free to reach out and contact me! Again, thank you so much!
