Mweruka Junior School provides quality education for +/-400 underprivileged children in grades pre-kindergarten through 7th grade in a very poor, rural area in Uganda.  Shoes are provided to each student as part of their uniform.  

Most of the children who attend the school have to walk a considerable distance - some even walking an hour or more each direction every day to reach the school.  300 out of the 400 students are provided with new shoes every year.  Some outgrow their shoes and some shoes are damaged due to the paths to/from school being rough and sometimes muddy.  Plus we have new children entering the school each year.

The climate and territory around the school make the proliferation of a worm in the soil called Jiggers a major problem.  Jiggers enter the bottoms of bare feet that are in contact with the soil and cause infections which then become a health risk and cause absence from school.  Providing shoes to every student eliminates the Jigger risk and also helps protect the feet against injury from objects on the path and rough ground.  The shoes cost $17/pair and are made by a local cobbler thereby helping local community development.

We are asking each person to contribute a minimum of $17/month for a total of 12 pairs of shoes per year.  Contributions larger than this amount would be greatly appreciated.  However, if you cannot contribute the full $17/month, any amount you can contribute will be helpful as would a one-time donation for any amount.   If you are not able to donate, please pass the opportunity to someone else by promoting this fundraiser on Facebook, Twitter and in your other social circles.
