Historically, dominant-culture communities, including white communities, have benefitted from the systems and structures they created. With easier access to education, capital, media, and the legal system, these communities have thrived. But for a season in American history, the Black community was denied access to these systems and institutions, and when access was finally granted to people of color, it was limited.
The historical inequity in access to American systems created a gap between the Black and white communities, one that still exists today. By vulnerably committing to education, confession, lament, and intentionally engaging in acts of repair, we aim to close that gap.
The Voices Project has created the “National Repair Fund,” which allows organizations, churches, and individuals to actively demonstrate their commitment to repairing the breach. By donating between $1,000 to $10,000, participants in the National Repair Fund can advance equity for the Black community.
Participants in the fund will learn how American systems intentionally and unintentionally excluded members of the Black community. Members of the fund will have the opportunity to confess any party they may have played in these systems, and lament that participation. Then, they’ll see their generous donations put to work to create access and opportunities for future Black leaders.
The National Repair Fund will support projects affecting cultural shifts in The Voices Project’s areas of influence--arts, business, education, media, and church community engagement. Simply put, this fund creates an avenue for repair.
