World Newspapers this week headline the news of the Taal Volcano eruption on Sunday, January 12, 2020. Government officials are calling for the possible evacuation of 500,000 people from the path of this volcano, located about 10 miles from Tagaytay Christian Academy (TCA). Although the volcano is one of the world’s smallest, it is very deadly because its location within a lake mixes water and volcanic ash, which fragments into clouds of tiny glass shards. The 1911 eruption killed 1,335 persons, the 1965 eruption killed about 100. Officials warn that the volcano could blow in a much more major eruption without warning.
The initial blast killed livestock, but no people. Our friends at Tagaytay Christian Academy say Tagaytay City electricity and water were knocked out and people waiting out the volcano need facemasks to breathe the air contaminated with tiny glass fragments. The situation is dire. Contributions enable the purchase of facemasks, purchase of emergency food, generators, and help TCA as it uses its facilities to house ‘volcano refugees’.
