Gabriella Cherubim Wuo was born on September 29th, 2010. She joined CGA’s nursery class in January, 2015. She is the last of five children. Her parents live separately because of constant quarrels and fights. Two years ago, Gabriella and her mother and siblings moved to Mbita to live with her mother's sister who works at CGA. Despite the effort of local government intervention to make the father support his five children, the father adamantly refused to cooperate. By God’s grace, Gabriella’s mom opted to work hard and has been able to make enough money to buy food for her children. The older four children are in public schools. This will be a challenge to the mother but she is determined to work very hard. Gabriella’s mother found a job at a local hotel and works as a masseuse. The mother has been given a small house by a well-wisher where they all happily live. The house is divided into two and is made of tin and has a cemented floor. They have no electricity or running water. The family uses small solar gadgets for lighting so the children can read and use lake water for general cleaning. They use charcoal or firewood for cooking. Gabriella’s mom is sometimes away for almost week because of her work; but this does not worry Gabriella because they have a house help that lives with them and with two of her own children. Gabriella is an ever strong and determined child. 2018 Update: The family has relocated to a more spacious house that is close to her aunt's house. They have running water and electricity. Three of her older siblings are in high school. This has forced the mother to take up a job far away from home so that she can pay fees and make ends meet. Her aunt's family continues to take care of Gabriella. 2020 Update: Gabriella lives with her mother who makes and sells fried samosas by the roadside to support her family. Her mother left her former job to stay with Gabriella as she goes to CGA. Gabriella's mother could no longer continue to pay rent since she quit her far away job. She was forced to relocate to another affordable house that is about an hour's walk to CGA. They currently live in a permanent three room house. They have no electricity or running water. They use paraffin for lighting and lake water for daily use. They treat water for drinking. Their house is clean and neat. 2023 Update: Gabriella joined junior secondary, and her academic performance is above average.
