His mother separated from her husband, and lives with the grandmother too. She is, however, mentally unstable and has a challenge of raising Ryan. They live in a permanent house a few minutes walk from the lake and depend on the lake water for washing. However, they have tap water within the compound where they get their drinking water. They have no electricity in their house and use solar for lighting. They cook with firewood.
