Second Chance Response to COVID-19 in Haiti
We are living in unique times worldwide and walking through it together.
We understand crisis because at Second Chance that’s what we do- help families in crisis. We are not scared or filled with anxiety during this season, yet we are cautiously trying to respond the best we can to it.
Second Chance Haiti is raising awareness and funds for vulnerable families affected by COVID-19. During this season we are going to remain very focused on the mission to empower families and leave a legacy for Jesus.
Some realities of the vulnerability of people in Haiti include: the virus is present, strict curfews and closed borders are in place, social distancing is difficult, water and hygiene/sanitation is difficult, children cared for by widows and elderly could be abandoned, medical care is limited and there is minimal access to testing, supplies will grow short and prices will get higher.
We know there will be drastic economic repercussions and fall out which will be more disastrous than the actual virus. What cost $1 last week is now $2 and by next week could be $3.
While there have been limited cases of the virus reported in Haiti, mostly due to lack of testing, the response has been devastating. With Haiti on complete lockdown and trade coming to a near halt, vulnerable families are no longer able to rely on the local economy for the little income they had. Similar to schools in the US, closed schools mean some children may go days without a meal.
Many in the developing world are fearing hunger, not the virus.
Our response so far in Haiti: continued Restorative Care (24/7 care for those in our Child Sponsorship Program), we are going to continue paying teacher and staff salaries, current families will continue receiving aid in the Family Empowerment Program. We will not take in new children or families. We will however, support families in our communities that are the most vulnerable and/or at risk to abandon their children. We are aiming to keep families together and give them the support they need- crucial food support for these families, as well as hygiene supplies to keep themselves healthy and safe from the virus.
Our response so far stateside: pausing all travel both domestic and international, transitioning all meetings to Zoom calls and staying in communication non stop with other leaders of nonprofits and with our Second Chance team, and no spending unless essential.
As we move forward, we are going to need your help funding the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund. We know God will lead us through this and we are thankful to be walking through this season with you. We are in this together. We will fight together and we will come out better.
Thank you,
Ashley Petress, Executive Director - Second Chance Global
