At Second Chance we understand that globally the numbers are inaccurate. We know that in Haiti there are less than 2,000 tests available for the 11.3 million present.
The country has 33 confirmed cases of the 257 that have been tested. As of this morning, there has been 3 deaths. Due to the inaccuracy in testing, the best way for us to monitor the situation will be from watching the deaths.
The Dominican Republic faced the virus roughly 2-3 weeks prior to Haiti so we are going to start observing and using their effects as a guide. As of this morning, the Dominican Republic has 2967 confirmed cases and 173 deaths.
Due to shortage of equipment (only 64 ventilators and many of the 30-40 hospitals in the entire country shutting down out of fear), those with unrelated symptoms to Covid-19 will not be treated. We are working with local leaders to determine if we can use our community churches as health centers if needed in the coming weeks.
Thankfully, we were able to send funds last week to get food to the neighbors of the communities we serve. We have continued educating those that we are providing basic food and supplies to. We have also started sewing masks so that we can provide them to as many people as we can. This week we will again purchase as much physical hygiene products, cleaning products, and food as we can.
The Second Chance team is working hard to stay up to date. We have been on daily Zoom calls or webinars in the last 10 days with others leading in third world countries. We are connecting with 35+ non profit leaders in Haiti who are sharing critical resources and materials for health awareness and education, key updates on support opportunities, and key updates on food security concerns and how we are working to address them.
We believe that if you are reading this you are an answered prayer that can give as you can when you can, activate your community, and/or stand in agreement with us that families will remain healthy and empowered through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Thanks,
